Kundalini Yoga Class

"I have been fascinated and drawn to study yoga since I was about 10 years old. I read every book I could find and practiced on my own when I was young because there were few if any classes. When I graduated from medical school and decided to practice preventive medicine, yoga became an important tool for me to teach people healthy lifestyle habits. It also became a wonderful way for me to treat back and joint pain. I have studied many different styles of yoga and integrated them all into my own way of teaching.

After teaching yoga for about 25 years I was introduced to Kundalini Yoga. I must admit I didn’t fall in love with it immediately. But the more I studied it the more I felt like I had found the “holy grail” of yoga. Not only has it dramatically changed the way I teach yoga, it has changed my life. It is the purest; most sophisticated, and undiluted form of yoga. It is like a rare and perfect jewel that has expanded my knowledge of ancient medicine and given me incredible tools for helping people heal mentally, physically, and spiritually.

What is so different about Kundalini Yoga? The first difference you will observe is that we chant. Every class begins with “tuning in”, an ancient chant that calls upon the divine wisdom inside yourself to guide you through class. Most of the class is done with eyes closed so you continue to listen to your body rather than perform for someone else. This makes it noncompetitive. Most postures are done sitting or lying down instead of standing. Postures are often held longer than in hatha yoga. There is usually movement in postures and sometimes very intense breath work. Some postures and movements seem peculiar because they are making us move and use our body and mind in ways we don’t in our day-to-day activities. It works on strength and endurance, not just flexibility.

Kundalini yoga is also different because teachers use sets or sequences of exercises called kriyas. These sets of exercises were developed by the sages throughout history and some have been passed on for thousands of years. Each kriya has a specific purpose. For example, there are kriyas for the liver, the kidneys and adrenals, the glandular system, the lymphatic and immune systems, the heart and circulation, the digestive system, the lungs and so on. There are kriyas for depression, insomnia, to relieve internal anger, and to heal addictions just to name a few. In fact there is an ocean of information in this ancient technology that fills a void in our culture’s concept of fitness.

The word “Kundalini” means “the coil in the hair of the beloved” and represents the uncoiling or unwinding of the inner awareness of our spiritual nature. Kundalini is described as dormant energy residing at the base of the spine. Through precise muscle control, breathing, and visualization one can access and develop this energy for healing. The ultimate purpose of Kundalini Yoga is to teach us how to be healthy, happy, and holy. It was developed when the sages realized that the practice of hatha yoga takes hours a day to perfect. That leaves no time for a family, a career, and an everyday life. Kundalini is called the “fast track” because in a short period of time you can bring your body and mind into a healthy state of balance. It’s fast, fun, and focused and it’s not like anything you’ve ever done before.

Although I never met him, I am grateful for Yogi Bahjan for bringing this secret sacred science to the U.S. He came from India in 1969 and was the first person to teach Kundalini Yoga publicly. Even though he received death threats for doing so, he believed it was everyone’s birthright to have access to this information. He devoted his life to teaching teachers that could spread the word about this technology. He believed it would make the world a better place for all of us to live in. He died in 2004 but left a legacy of information. I have no doubt that as more people find out about Kundalini Yoga it will become increasingly popular. As modern medicine is beginning to understand the body as an electromagnetic field, it too will be amazed at the wisdom found inside this precious gift."
